  • RIP Platforms ..(happy dance starting NOW!)

After season after relentless season of the platform, which just seemed to get bigger and bigger, it seems to be official – they are OVER. All the devotees can now use these artefact’s as doorstops perhaps?
I have always been a fan of the no platform pointed toe stiletto. Occasionally a rounded toe too. Boring? Maybe. Classic. Definitely.

THANK YOU fashion gods for widening me shoe options by about a 1000%. I hated the platform. It made me too tall, it didn’t look elegant. In short (or freakishly tall), it looked ugly… sceptical? see below:

    Victoria Beckham – Before:

    And After:

Isn’t it so much better?!?!?!?!?!? Now I am coveting these:

  • Pre Fall 2013 – Yves Saint Laurent would be….

turning in his grave or giving a standing applause? There was no official show and as Milan Men’s Fashion week has started combined with the Golden Globes, the release of the Saint Laurent collection was a non-event in more than one way.

In his first season for the newly re-named house, Hedi Slimane showed a collection that was underwhelming to say the least. Given his history and stature in the industry, it seemed that despite this he was given a ‘do-over’ by the industry… can we be so generous this time?

Here is a living breathing example of what he delivered last time:

Yes it’s Anna Della Russo and Yes we love her and Yes she looks great in everything, but is it WOW?! or is it a bit too much like it was fished out of the costume department after the Mask of Zorro was made? OK it’s a look, it’s Gothic LA, yada yada, but from a heralded so called genius like Mr Slimane (he totally inspired Karl to lose 500 million kgs to fit into his clothes) I just expected more. I wanted it to be more beautiful.

So, on to this season. Here are 3 of the about 19 looks:

The dress below – totally hot. I get it. Think I saw it in Zara this season just gone..

The leather dress is cool and edgy, reinforces the leather story for another season, I think Phoebe did it better though, and I’m pretty sure TopShop did one just like it not so long ago.

This one is tough to say.. it’s a knit and presumably a skirt, with the same jacket in the top photo. The look reminds me of an angry teenager I’ve probably seen hanging around a cinema complex somewhere. I guess the overall impression I’m getting or giving I guess is that as far as women’s wear is concerned, Hedi Slimane is a great stylist. The accessories are great. The hats from last season are already everywhere and the bags are lovely and not doubt will do well enough to justify his position at the house. I’m glad he didn’t do predictable and mine the archives for another kind of do-over – like we need to see safari suits right now anyway, but in my mind at least YSL was glamour and it was cool. He has hit a nail on the head with some cool here, but let’s have some glamour too.

  • Pre Fall 2013 – Phoebe vs Stella

So the Pre-Fall 2013 season is showing now.. sounds dangerous no? Pre – Fall… hehehe… anyway, this seems to be a new season that has emerged over the last few years and quite frankly, I Love It.

Celine came up with a brilliant show a few days ago, filled with very Celine like pieces that have had their volume ‘turned up’.. mostly I am loving the use of Navy, the leather, the hats, which feel very ‘I spent my holiday in Bolivia and Mexico and this is what I brought back’ and THE SHOES. If you saw my post the other day about ‘The New Shoes‘ you will have seen those black and white Kurt Geiger Loafers, which if you are clever you will get your hands on NOW.

In comparison, the lovely Stella McCartney also featured Navy:

(Love these boots, will be looking for the Zara knock-off next season!)

And Stella also did oversize too!
That being said, am loving her splashes of camel in the collection. Also bodes well for my desire for a new Camel coat next winter!

And finally, she included plenty of the Berry/Maroon colour of this winter, which means only one thing- get your hands on it in the sales NOW!  Love the stripes on this dress. Ms McCartney says her mother was part of the inspiration for this collection – love the shape of the dress, very 70s made new…

The entire collection for Stella, Celine and the rest of the pre-Fall shows can be found here

  • The New Shoes

Living in London for nearly 4 years now has had me staring touching and considering the Brogue/Oxford Loafer shoe, but not yet buying it. How would I wear it and not look like I’m trying too hard? How would I wear it and not look like I need to be put in a taxi back to East London? And then of course there are the flashbacks to my school days and the uniform that entailed brown brogues, which sound stylish.. now…

So on my weekly journey into Selfridges, I did some research… there is still so much sale stuff around, but so far, I found these, and they tie in quite nicely with the new monochrome look for summer!

I totally HEART Bottega… the slippers below are soooo cute..

Kurt Geigers ( on sale too)

    And of course CELINE….

  • On my mood board for this season….

I always feel that despite the obvious trends that start on the runway and make it to Zara, Topshop et al, for me there is just one or two ideas that I’m really feeling.. I put together my favourite things for the season here:

     Here is the detail:

    texture….

     more texture…

     some opulence..

     and some luxury opulence…

The obvious mood here is embellishment and opulance.. and a hot man for good measure 🙂
Its so helpful to put together your key mood for the season, it prevents shopping errors, especially with the sale season coming soon… I’m definitely going to be adding more embellished items to my wardrobe soon..

  • These are a few of my favourite things…

Am loving these shoes for the party season, or even just going to the supermarket, there is never a bad time to have a bit of glamour in your life no?

My perfect party outfit this winter, well until Christmas anyway, would be these, matched with this dress:

For a total rock look, or maybe with the skirt and top below, when I’m trying to be a bit more elegant, without trying

Fashion fairies send these my way!

(Shoes: Valentino Rock Stud, Dress: Zara, Skirt: Balenciaga, Top: Zara )

  • Festive!

In this season of berry / maroon / burgundy / wine coloured clothes, it’s easy to overlook red. Just red. Fire engine, valentino very red… or in this case Donna Karan red – I saw this outfit in Selfridges the other days and couldn’t take my eyes off it. …

  • Eye Candy – A Neck Party

It is a season of embellished necks, I saw this at Cos yesterday, thought it was a gorgeous alternative while still staying on trend:

  • Margiela!!!!!! thank you Apple….

I have been dreaming thinking sweating about it ever since I saw the collection online … the boots, I had to have the boots. If you haven’t seen them, here they are:

I’m willing to give up comfortable shoes and a month of groceries to have them.. So this morning I set my alarm to log in and buy them online – easy, no? why schlep to the store and wait in the cold when I can do it from my bed… but no, by 10am, I had the boots in my sight, but not in my shopping cart… off I went to Oxford street.. the loooovvveelyyy security guards tell me at 10.30 that we can’t shop without a wristband (dammit) until 12.30. Crap. crap crap crap. there will be nothing left by then.
screw that Well I guess it’s only fair everyone gets a turn.

I run down Regent Street to the Apple store where there are fast computers as far as the eye can see.
I swear Apple isn’t paying me, but the connection and the site was soooo fast, at 10.39 am I had placed my order AND had time to buy more. If only Visa was as generous as Apple…

So then as smug casual as can be I wandered to the H&M on Oxford street at 12.00 – and here is what it looked like:

Reasonably civilised, but all the good stuff was gone…. did anyone else get what they wanted??

  • and we’re back…

One of my favourite bloggers.. no actually she IS my favourite.. is Garance Dore. She is incredibly insightful and creates beautiful drawings, photos and more recently video. Last week I watched an interview she did with Costanza Pascolato of Vogue Brazil who is a formidable force in fashion, frequently snapped outside the shows and now at age 72, is no doubt an accurate voice of how fashion has changed over the years.

The most interesting point was when she said that since the ’80s and ’90s the luxury groups have owned fashion. Everywhere we go there are the same stores, the same brands and the same looks. Obviously these filter down to the mainstream, so where once upon a time a designer look was exclusive and expensive, now it’s just expensive.

As the wave of international chain stores, from high end to the likes of Zara and H&M sweep through the world (they are now making their way over to Australia, having nearly conquered Asia), are we gradually seeing the demise of the unique and individual independent designer, one that can actually make a living from their work?

As fashion lovers, do we want this? Can it be avoided? How many of us go to the trouble of seeking out a unique item of clothing, and when we do, do we buy it? Comments please!
